Gluten-free Christmas Pretzels
Christmas pretzels are enticing in a bright red dish.

This year our family has decided to do something different for Christmas, no store-bought gifts. ‘What?’ you say, ‘No hustling through the never-ending crowds of people? No figuring out if Aunt Mary should get new slippers or Uncle Paul a new tie?’ Yes, that’s right..everything will be homemade, from little to big, it doesn’t matter the size of the gift, it just requires being made with heartfelt love. It sounds good in theory until the days are ticking away and there are so many gifts to make! But with four days left until Christmas, I am nearly done and very pleased with my gift making this year, and surprisingly none of them are food! Of course I can’t post any of them until after Christmas, just in case any family members read this blog post before the 25th! But it’s something your family may want to consider, or possibly implement it on a smaller scale and try only homemade gifts for the stockings. It’s food for thought in this over commercialized Christmas world we live in.

Chocolate Pretzels on Cookie Tray
Using a Ziploc bag with a tiny corner cut off creates a perfect piping bag to drizzle the white chocolate.

I used Glutino pretzels for this recipe, which my husband, who is not gluten-free, prefers over flour pretzels. They have a nice crisp buttery flavor. Dip them in dark, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate and place them on a parchment covered cookie tray. Putting the melted white chocolate into a Ziploc freezer bag and nipping a very tiny corner off with scissors, creates the perfect piping bag for drizzling the white chocolate.

Makes the perfect last-minute gift idea for your gluten-free friends!

Apply the crushed candy canes as soon as you have drizzled the white chocolate so it stays on when the chocolate hardens. This recipe is so quick and easy, if you have any last-minute gluten-free friends you need to give a quick gift to, consider making these pretzels. They can be completed in less than a half hour. It is cold enough here in the Pacific Northwest that I was able to set them outside to harden in a matter of minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag Glutino Pretzels (14.1 oz)
  • 1 1/2 cup Semi-sweet or Milk Choc. Chips (melted over double broiler)
  • 3/4 cups White Chocolate (melted over double broiler)
  • 2-3 Candy Canes (crushed)

Directions

Step 1
Cover a large cookie tray with parchment paper. Set aside.
Step 2
Melt semi-sweet or milk chocolate in a double broiler. Remove from heat and dip individual pretzels in chocolate, coating completely. Lay on parchment covered cookie tray to dry.
Step 3
Crush candy canes by placing them in a Ziploc freezer bag and pounding them with a flat object such as a rolling pin or the bottom of a stainless steel measuring cup. Set aside.
Step 4
Melt white chocolate in a double broiler until just melted. Do not boil. Place in a Ziploc freezer bag and cut just the tip off of one bottom corner. Drizzle melted white chocolate over the chocolate covered pretzel by squeezing white chocolate out of the pin hole in a back and forth motion.
Step 5
Sprinkle crushed candy cane pieces on top while chocolate is still wet. Place in a cool spot to dry. If giving as gift, place in a clear food grade bag and seal with a red & white striped bow (fills 6-8 small gift bags).
