New gluten-free products are popping up by the dozen! I must say, it is a great time in life to be gluten-free. I’ve mentioned it before, I was diagnosed fifty years ago, and the gluten-free products were almost non-existent. Did I just give away my age? Well, when you get to be my age, you’re finally at the stage in life when nothing really matters but what should matter; family, friends, loving and forgiving one another. Life is too short to hold on to grudges, or be concerned about wrinkles, besides, wrinkles show character and say, “I’ve battled through this life and these are my war wounds”.  Some of these wrinkles appear through smiles and laughter and others through worrying about my kids, but either way, I’m okay with grasping a hold of every one I’ve earned with dignity. I’m a grandma, and it’s good to look over fifty, not my daughter’s age. I’m not saying don’t take care of your skin, actually, just the opposite. You don’t want to look eighty when you’re fifty! But don’t let a few wrinkles throw you into depression, you’ve earned them.

Did you know that many skin care products on the market contain gluten? Wheat protein is used as a binding agent for many hair products and skin firming creams, which is all the more reason to accept those wrinkles! Here’s an article printed in the LA Times called Going for the Glow Without the Gluten.” And here is an informational Pinterest board that lists many companies that offer gluten-free skin care, make-up and hair products: Gluten-free Products for your Body.  Another company you may want to check out that is dedicated to producing gluten-free skin products is MY BEAUTY SOCIETY.

So what are the new gluten-free products in the food aisle? Here are some that might be worth a few of your dollars. Bob’s Red Mill has recently produced a gluten-free version of Muesli. It is full of whole grain gluten-free oats, raisins, dried apples, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, coconut, almonds, and dry roasted soybeans.  If you’ve missed eating muesli, this may be just the ticket!

“Cup 4 Cup” by Sur La Table has produced a wonderful pizza dough. It rolls out to a nice thick Chicago Style deep dish pizza crust. If you are looking for a thin crust, this might not be the one for you. The flavor and texture is great but the dough is a little hard to roll into a thin crust.

Schar has produced a deli bread that is receiving great reviews. The texture is great as well as the taste. The only weird part about the bread is the packaging. They place five slices inside one package, which either means the last sandwich you make needs to be a half sandwich, or buy the case because it comes with 6 bags which equals thirty slices, or fifteen whole sandwiches! Some say it is the best bread on the market, but at $34.99 for a case of six, that is a little over a dollar a slice. Yikes!

And next time you’re in the grocery store, check out the Asian section. The San-J company has just produced a whole line of new gluten-free products such as Thai Peanut Sauce, Szechuan Sauce, Teriyaki Sauce, Sweet & Tangy Sauce, Asian BBQ, Orange Sauce, Mongolian Sauce, and Tamari-Lite (low sodium soy sauce); all gluten-free!

Fifty years ago the best I could do was find a loaf of 100% soy flour. Even smothered in peanut butter it still remains the foulest tasting bread I have ever eaten! I may have had to wait over fifty years but with all the new gluten-free products on the market, it was worth the wait.

  1. Laurie you’re ahead of me! I’ve “only” been gluten free for almost 31 years, since I was 43. It was really tough then. No bread that was edible. I used to make my own in the bread machine, but having gone through three of those, I no longer have one. There still isn’t much good bread on the market!
